The use of the Jury system has declined over the past century. Has the time now come to abolish it completely? Critically evaluate the Jury in the English Legal System. Juries have been used in the English Legal System for over 1000 years. They were originally used to provide local knowledge, information and were commonly used as witnesses for the cases. It was during the 15th century that the role of the jury started to change and become more independent assessors, the way that we see them today. The use of juries has declined over the past century, as they are only used in serious criminal cases and very rarely in civil cases. Juries are only needed for trials in the crown court; they are used to decide whether the defendant is guilty or not guilty.
