The criminal justice system Introduction We are all familiar with and use the words, 'crime' and 'criminal'. We know that there are laws which, if you break them, leave you open to being arrested by the police, taken to the court and punished in some ways. There is a * criminal justice system which is based upon criminal laws. We are to a certain extent familiar with the idea of law itself - we are aware that there are not just criminal laws but that there are courts and tribunals which can be called upon if, for example, you are injured in a road accident, are unfairly dismissed from your job or have a dispute over property rights with your neighbour.
