The Interpretation Act 1978 provides certain standard of definitions of common provisions, such as the rule that the singular includes the plural and 'he' includes 'she', while interpretation sections at the end of the most modern Acts define some of the words used within them - the police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 contains such a section. A further source of help has been provided since the beginning of 1999: all Bills passed since that date is the subject of special explanatory notes, which are made public.
