Legal Profession (a) Outline the training and work undertaken by barristers and solicitors The legal profession is divided into solicitors and barristers. There are many differences between the two professions in training and work. To become a solicitor a person needs to have 'A' levels or equivalent, and it is usual to have a law degree. Starting with solicitors, the training is by obtaining a law degree or if a student has a degree in another subject it is necessary to take the Common Profession Examination (CPE) and then going on to a vocational training stage for an extra year. After this the trainee solicitors have to pass the Legal Practice Course (LPC) which includes training in client-interviewing and business management, negotiation and legal research.
