ANDREW STIRLING LAW COURSEWORK: POLICE POWERS A) Outline the powers of the police with regard to arrest. B) Comment on the adequacy of these powers. A) The police force is governed directly be PACE (Police And Criminal Evidence act of 1984). This act gives the force their powers on arrest and on holding/charging potential criminals, they can now only take certain cases to the crown court etc like murder these are called arrestable offences. Of which the police can arrest upon suspicion of someone doing or about to do the crime. When the PACE act of 1984 came out it brought in new rules and regulations that made sure that the police didn't act ultra vires (out of the range of their powers) and was aimed to stop some if not all of the wrongful convictions that where due to "on the side" evidence being given.
