Mobile Phones and the Law The use of hand-held mobile phones whilst driving has been well documented recently with the introduction of a new law on 1st December 2003 which prohibits drivers from using a hand held phone, or a similar device whilst driving. The result of this will be a penalty of £30 or up to £1000 if the offender goes to court. The law defines the use of hand held phones as any electric device used for accessing oral, text, or pictorial communications (including internet and text messages). The only exemption of this law is the 2-way "press to talk" radios, used by emergency services and taxi drivers, or using a mobile phone for a genuine emergency call to 999, if its unsafe to stop. The bill for this new law was taken to court in August 2002 as a result of the number of accidents caused whilst driving....
