How Did the East Indian Company Lay Down the Foundation of British Rule in India by 1858? In 1858, India became a crown colony of Britain formally. As the Indians were so conservative and traditional that it was difficult for Westerners to rule over the Indians. It was the work of the East Indian Company (EIC) which lay down the foundation of British rule in India so that the British could take control over India so smoothly. In the following essay, I am going to introduce how the EIC laid down the foundation in territorial, administrative, educational, judicial and material aspects. Taking the advantage of the fall of Mughal Empire in the 17th century, Britain brought India under her control.
