High Court Under s. 4(1)(e) of the supreme Courts Act 1981, the High Court is staffed by a maximum of 97 judges (when all posts are filled) known as puisine judges. The puisne judges of the High Court are styled 'Justices of the High Court'. The number of puisne judges may be increased by Order in council. Appointment is by the Queen on the advice of the Lord Chancellor from persons with a ten-year High Court qualification, i.e. from those who have had a right of audience (or advocacy) in relation to all proceedings in the High Court for at least ten years. Also eligible are Circuit judges who have held that office for at least two years (s. 10 (3) of the 1981 Act as amended by s. 71 of the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990).
