EU Law is often described as flexible, open ended, paradoxical. The question, however, remains whether such descriptions are mere attempts to cover a disorganised, cumbersome and contradictory project, or whether they really try to support and encourage a differentiated and plural political and legal organisation. EU law is a rather complex subject and it is difficult to compare it to other legal systems. It would be a helpful and informative start to explain why the EU was created and the history of European integration. In the aftermath of the Second World War there was a huge desire amongst the countries of Europe to develop and warrant a lasting peace with a new social and legal atmosphere free from the nationalism that had proven to be so destructive.
