Discuss the decision making process of the main institutions in the European Union At the end of the Second World War, Europe's economies were shattered. Some had a vision of co-operation and a more united peaceful |Europe. This vision led to the creation of the European Union (EU). The UK joined the EU in 1973. The Union embraces economic, political and social objectives and in so doing brings together the 15 European countries shown in figure 1.1. Fig:1.1. Its important to understand the institutions which engage in the decision making and exercise power in the Community, and to consider the changes which have taken place in the interplay between them. It has suggested that the EU's achievements have been constrained by failings in its decision making and also that these need to be more democratic.
