Legal Profession Q. Describe the training of Barristers and Solicitors. When a person begins training to become either barrister or a solicitor, there are two possible routes to take, either law degree or non-law degree. However, beginning training with a non-law degree requires a Common Professional Examination, this is a 1 year course at costs £4,600. From here a solicitor will spend another year on a Legal Practice course costing around £5,600. During this course the trainee will develop legal skills through experience in client interviewing, negotiation, advocacy, drafting legal documents and legal research. After this the trainee must obtain a training contract by a Firm of Solicitors, Local Authority or CPS (Crown Prosecution service). This contract lasts two years, during which the trainee will be paid a small salary and have to complete a Professional Skills Course lasting 20 days.
