ASSIGNMENT D 1(a) Describe the system of appointing and training the judiciary. The function of the judiciary in the United Kingdom is to conduct trials appropriately, to advise participants throughout a trial and to pass a sentence (criminal courts) or a verdict (civil/criminal courts) at the end of the trial. Since judges carry out such a visible role in the judicial system, they must be selected with great care and especial consideration must be given to their experience, their disinterestedness and their exemplary conduct in life. Appointment The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) has been responsible for the recruitment and selection of judicial candidates since April 2006. Once selected, candidates are then recommended to the Lord Chancellor for approval. The JAC consists of a chancellor - currently Baroness Prashar - and fifteen commissioners.
