Compare and contrast the American enforcement approach to drug control with that adopted in the UK In 1971 President Nixon declared a "war" on drugs in America. This restrictive approach to drug consumption is merely a reflection of a growing intolerance to narcotics, in which drugs are defined as a social evil that must be eradicated. The historical background of drug control has varied considerably between different cultures and societies. While the American criminal justice system has chosen a prohibitive approach of criminalization, law enforcement agencies within the United Kingdom have historically adopted a medical approach, in which drug activity has been defined as being either a private vice or a public disease, according to the user's socio-economic background. We are now however moving to a more restrictive system of drug control, in which the possession, manufacture and import of various unprescribed drugs is defined as unlawful.
