Clair heard a radio advert asking for people to come forward to be considered as Magistrates. a) Explain to her how magistrates are chosen and the duties they undertake. The magistrate system is a part of the English Legal System which deals with 98% of all criminal cases. These crimes consist of minor offences such as shop lifting and minor driving offences to more serious crimes such as assault and murder, but these more solemn cases get referred to a Crown Court. The people who look at the cases are called magistrates or Justices of the Peace (JP's); they are ordinary members of the local area and they are appointed by the Lord Chancellor. They do not need any formal qualifications but there is a selection process which requires certain abilities such as common sense.
