What is Affirmative Action? Affirmative action has a general definition. Affirmative action occurs when ever an organisation bestirs itself to make sure that it is treating people fairly, regardless of their gender or ethnic group membership (Crosby: 2003). According to McElroy (1995) affirmative action as a policy, is usually said to in place when a company or an institutions takes reasonable action to remedy any discriminatory behaviour which has occurred in the past. On ethical grounds, most people would agree with such a policy; although many would question the wisdom of enforcing the policy by law (McElroy: 1995). According to Crosby (2003) although they share the goal of equalizing opportunities among people, affirmative action and equal opportunity differs from each other in notable ways.
