It is the minimum condition to assess whether someone is liable for a crime which specifies a consequence and it would be wrong to convict a person who did not cause the consequence. The problem arises however when there is uncertainty as to what was the principle cause of the criminal act. For example when there is a long chain of events leading up to the consequence how far can we trace back the steps to determine who the initiator of the actual criminal act was?
