1(a). Describe patterns of gender differences in criminal behaviour. (20%) Women are far less likely than men to commit crime and this pattern seems to hold true all over the world. Only 19% of known offenders are women. Nevertheless, women are far more likely to experience domestic violence. Two women are murdered every week by their current or former partner and 44% of violent incidents against women were domestic.1 The prison population in England and Wales in October 2003 was 74,162, an increase of 2% on the number in October 2002. Both male and female prison population have risen in most months since the beginning of 1993, apart from the usual seasonal falls in December each year. Between October 2002 and October 2003, the number of females increased by 1%, from 4,427 to 4,462, and the number of males held increased by 2%, from 68,559 to 69,700.
