Have a little read: ... Why does justice pose a problem for utilitarianism? Can utilitarianism answer the criticism that it would lead to injustice? Mill says that throughout history, one of the biggest barriers to the acceptance of utility has been that it does not allow for a theory of justice. Therefore, in the fifth chapter of Utilitarianism Mill tries to determine whether the justice or injustice of an action is something intrinsic and distinct from questions of utility. The question proposes a clear structure for answering, which I intend following. Firstly I will look at the reasons why justice poses a problem for utilitarianism. I will then go on to examine the criticism that utilitarianism would to injustice and finally look at how utilitarianism may be reconciled with the theory of justice. Raphael in his moral philosophy states that justice is a complex concept. Although all people believe in justice, they have different conceptions of
