In response to this question this essay will begin by providing a summary of the rational choice theory. It will discuss aspects of criminal behaviour which could be explained by this theory and give examples where this may not be the case. In addition aspects of structural theories will be discussed to determine a conclusion of this agency driven explanation. The rational choice theory argues that crime is an everyday occurrence in society and adopts a straightforward and logical way of explaining criminal behaviour. It believes that the majority of criminals are normal rational thinkers (apart from the mentally ill) who choose to commit crime or pursue criminal way of life, just as a person would say choose a certain job or career.
