Legal Research Exercise Special protection and treatment is deemed necessary for those under 18 accused of committing a crime.1 Therefore certain rules relating to the legal liability of youths influence the way in which they are punished for the crimes they commit. At present it stands that children: * Under the age of 10 are not criminally responsible for their acts. But, if the child repeatedly breaks the law the local authority may apply for them to be taken into care. * Between 10 and 13 are criminally responsible and can be convicted of a criminal offence (Crime And Disorder Act 1998), if proved to have sufficient capacity to know that what they have done is wrong. * Over 14 are criminally responsible and may have fingerprints taken by police. * Under 17 must be released on bail at police station unless there is good reason not to.
