Explain the range of sentences available and what factors may be taken into consideration when constructing a sentence Many different sentences can e given to offenders, depending on the severity of the crime they have committed. In this essay I will describe the different sentences and how a judge would decide on which one to give and why. The first sentence I will look at is fines. Fines can be given to most offences other than murder. All offences within the magistrates' court hold a maximum set fine, depending on the offence. In the crown court there is no maximum fine, the amount reflects the seriousness of the offence. Fines are usually given for offences like drink driving, where the offender will get a ban and also a fine. The judge may take into account the offender's financial situation when making the decision on the amount of the fine. If a...
