... Did She Deserve it? Danielle McCarthy explores the Ruth Ellis case. Ruth Ellis has always been portrayed as the victim of a cruel boyfriend who abused her and a cruel legal system that hanged her. But is this really an accurate picture? Based upon the known facts, which are very well documented, we take an "alternative" look at this famous case. Wednesday 13th of July 1955 at London's Holloway prison, Ruth Ellis secured her place in history, becoming the sixteenth and last woman to be executed in Britain in the 20th century. Her case stays in our memories because she was hanged, if she had been given a life sentence we would probably have forgotten about her in a matter of weeks. Victim Ruth Ellis had a passionate but tempestuous relationship with her victim, David Blakely. Blakely was a dropout, heavy drinker and womaniser who 10 days before the infamous events that were to follow,
