According to Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, "Canadians want a youth justice system that protects society and instills values such as accountability, responsibility and respect ...They want governments to help prevent youth crime in the first place and make sure there are meaningful consequences when it occurs"(Thompson,1). In response to the concerns of the public, the Government of Canada has established a renewed youth justice system. Through the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), the government proposes to construct a system that "...fosters values such as accountability and responsibility and makes it clear that criminal behaviour will lead to meaningful consequences" (Government of Canada, 1). The government has also proposed to make every effort to prevent youth crime and to encourage youth who do choose to involve themselves in youth crime, to turn their lives around and become law-abiding citizens.
