The offence appears to be theft, its definition being set out in the Theft Act 1968 s.1 as follows: "A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it..." In Lawrence v Metropolitan Police Commissioner (1972) it was made clear by the House of Lords that there were five elements to the offence: (i) dishonesty (MR) (ii) appropriation (AR) (iii) property (AR) (iv) belonging to another (AR) (v) with the intention of permanent deprivation (MR) All of the above elements must be present in order for the offence of theft to be committed. It is clear that there are two mens rea elements, dishonesty and the intention of permanent deprivation, and three actus reus elements, appropriation of property...
