An Analysis of Justice Understanding the meanings or definitions of certain words is key to grasping what an author may be trying to convey. In his play Antigone, Sophocles dealt extensively with the definition of justice. One may argue that justice was served through Creon's actions when he sentenced Antigone to death. However, one may also argue that Antigone was not served justice, but rather that she acted out of justice when she buried her brother, in defiance of an edict, to honor the gods. This conflict-which, like in most pieces of literature, is the ultimate force driving a work forward-has no real resolution. Thus, in order to fully understand the conflict brought out in this play, a careful examination of the meanings of justice must be made-general definitions, and the significances Sophocles attaches to justice through the individuals in his play.
