Professor Brenneman Philosophy 101c 18 March 2005 Taking a Side In this paper I argue that Socrates is not contradicting himself with these two statements and that one of the two statements is Socrates' true view. Within this paper I will shows how there might appear to be a fundamental inconsistency expressed by Socrates within the two passages from the Apology compared to a passage taken from the Euthyphro. The passages from the Apology show Socrates claiming that he follows the dictates of the Gods. The statement made in the Euthyphro stages Socrates telling the reader he follows the dictates of reason. The noticeable contrast between the two passages is the concept that one cannot follow the dictates of the gods and the dictates of reason. From the reader's perspective or from an outside view, Socrates looks as if he is going against himself and his ideas. Socrates was given the gift of reason...
