UCL University College London _____ Module ID: CLAS 1206 Module Name: Interpreting Latin Literature Student: Efstathia Kostoglou Date: 21 April 2008 Plautus and Terence Titus Maccius Plautus (254BC-184BC) and Publius Terentius Afer (185BC-159BC) - better known as Plautus and Terence respectively - were the two most popular representatives of Roman comedy. There are twenty plays1 attributed to Plautus2 and only six3 to Terence, the younger of the two. Throughout this essay I will try to compare and expose the similarities and differences of the two playwrights in aspects of theme and plot(§1), characters (§2), staging, techniques and suspense(§3), language(§4), moral issues(§5) and comic spirit(§6). 1. It is important to keep in mind that Plautus was the first known playwright to write in a professional level as he was born and lived a generation before Terence.
