They watched intently at the shadows on the wall. Fixated upon whatever was projected by the fire behind them, the cave dwellers cared for nothing more than their present surroundings. The shadows cast over their heads provide meaning to their world; why should they care for anything else? Moreover, the dwellers are perfectly content in their caves, hidden far away from the real world. Just as the shadows on the wall of the cave serve as imitations of the truth to the cave dwellers, Scottie's soul, seen in the movie Vertigo, becomes corrupted as he loses his rational capacity to understand due to Judy's imitations.
