Outline the reason why some argue that morality is linked to religion. It has been argued by some scholars that morality has been liked to religion for some of the following reasons. It has been said that religion and morality provide a social cohesion and that religion structures the various moral codes that society has and that without religion, there is no rationale or meaning to these codes. For example, religion tells us that to lie or cheat is immoral and wrong and therefore, if we were to lie or cheat, we feel that this is wrong and so we feel guilty and do not do it again. It has also been argued that if we were to remove religion and God, this also means a removal of the shame and guilt and the removal of the shame and guilt breaks down powerful means of social control over peoples behaviour.
