Niccolo Machiavelli wrote The Prince in 1517 as a dissertation on power. He wrote this book, which he dedicated to his prince, Lorenzo De Medici, with hopes that it would allow him into the political world of Italy. He analyzed power and the way Italy could gain enough to become its own state and keep control. His extensive explanations were driven by his own fascination with power and his desire for an independent Italy. The most prominent idea in Machiavelli's The Prince is that in order for a prince to be successful, he had to do what was needed to remain in power. The more power a prince held over his people and other states, the better he was.
