Sanjit Oberai, R-no-212,T.Y.B.Arts Gerard Manley Hopkins Hopkins poems were first published By Robert Bridges in 1918 and had tremendous influence on English and American poetry. He was a Victorian who was writing in the spirit and interest of his own age, but his poetry was different from that of the Tennyson tradition of that age. The Victorians did not appreciate his poetry, he did not write for the general public and publishers would not publish his works. He was a Jesuit priest who was grounded into the works of Victorian poetry. He was the best Victorian nature poet and would involve himself in natural things and avoid falseness of sentiment. He would always work in complete isolation and verse writing for him was not a habit but a struggle with new material. At that time of his writing there were two major developments: Industrial revolution and the Romantic Movement....
