Angie Martinez November 29, 2006 Analyzing a Character The Outsider is a novel that emphasizes how society has power over the lives of many. Meursault, the protagonist, is a character who is judged for not crying about his mother's death and for killing an Arab with no particular reason or compassion whatsoever. His life is based in pure reason and for him there is nothing beyond the physical World. Also his lack of love, for his girlfriend Marie, is another factor that defines his true nature. For this reason, Meursault's personality and lack of care towards others is considered to be a threat to his society. Therefore, Meursault sense of rationalism, before his is sentenced to death, is what turns him into an outsider within his own society, Meursault name, lack of feelings and personality is what makes him an odd individual in the novel the outsider.
