... A Critique of Descartes' Trip In and Out of Skepticism Descartes is regarded as perhaps the first and greatest skeptic in philosophy. He is considered the father of modern philosophical thought and is said to have delivered arguably the most famous and influential one-liner in all of philosophy; "cogito ergo sum" or, "I think, therefore I am". It is my belief that with some careful consideration it can be found that Descartes' arguments, both in and out of skepticism, are not as strong as he asserted. I will briefly reconstruct some of Descartes' arguments in meditations I and II of his Meditations on First Philosophy, and then I will discuss some of the common objections and replies that surround them. Lastly, I will raise my own proposition of an alternative to Descartes' arguments that I think is a more reasonable possibility. Descartes starts his project for knowledge based on his dissatisfaction
