William Gladstone was Britain's first ever Liberal prime minister and the founder of classical liberalism. He was a deeply religious man and this was brought through infinitely in the way he ran the country. He not only acted on his own morals and beliefs but also religious morals, which eventually lead to his resignation in 1894. Throughout his career the main issue, which he supported, was the idea that Ireland should have home rule, however he faced much opposition on his theories as to this. Gladstone was the founder of Classic Liberalism; he believed that politics was the will of God and that no one should waste God's resources. Much of his political beliefs were founded on the teachings of Christianity and this opened up a door for many of his beliefs such as equality and personal responsibility.
