... To what extent were economic factors responsible for the downfall of Louis Phillipe in 1848? Economic factors generally play some part in causing revolution, particularly in early- mid 19th Century Europe with rising populations, and frequent crop failures. However, they tend not to lead directly to revolution; they usually cause general discontent and bread riots. In this case, however, economic factors play a bigger role than simply bringing bread riots; a large proportion of economic grievances caused discontent specifically towards Louis Phillipe and his government, they were seen as their fault. However, one cause is never sufficient to bring about revolution, a plethora of causes help provoke a revolution and they come in many different forms. The revolution of 1848 is no exception. As well as short and long term economic factors, an alienation of key social groups was achieved due to an inglorious foreign policy, corruption and an unwillingness to
