Why was Peter Brown's Study of the Holy Man in Late Antiquity such a Milestone in the Historical Study of this Period? "History, in its broadest sense, is the totality of all past events, although a more realistic definition would limit it to the known past. Historiography is the written record of what is known of human lives and societies in the past and how historians have attempted to understand them1." I feel that this quote from the Encarta encyclopaedia is influential in the study of the holy man in late antiquity. As the holy man was generally a nomad, it is therefore difficult to get exact records.
