Richard Lawson History Why is Erasmus Significant to the 16th Century and The Progress of the Reformation? Erasmus more than any other man was the symbol of what we call humanism. For a while he was the most famous and perhaps the most influential man in Europe. He was so famous that one of his friends is said to have confessed: "I am pointed out in public as the man who has received a letter from Erasmus." Getting a letter from Erasmus was better than going on television. The humanism of the 15th century was a liberal movement. Erasmus taught that knowledge was valuable. He taught that we should respect the opinions of others. In that sense his ideas seem to us very modern.
