Why did Caesar cross the Rubicon River on 10 January 49BC? We are told by Plutarch that on a journey to Spain, Caesar (then a propraetor) and his companions came across a small, barbaric village in the Alps. His companions mocked Caesar about gaining the highest office of the village, to which he replied, 'For my part, I had rather be the first man among these fellows, than the second man in Rome.'1 While the amount of truth in this story cannot be ascertained, it does seem to offer an insight into the character of Caesar and the reasons as to why Caesar crossed the Rubicon River on 10 January 49. This question has been the cause of much argument and has been the victim of great bias.
