What was the purpose of staging the 1924 Wembley Empire Exhibition, and how successful an Enterprise was it? The King opened the Wembley Empire exhibition on St George's day, 23 April 1924, making Wembley famous. During its 150 days' opening, 27 million people visited it, more then half the population of Great Britain, and more then four times as many as went to the Great Exhibition of 1851. They came away with an impression of a thriving, forward-looking and diverse Empire. The main aim of the exhibition being to celebrate the achievements of the British Empire. Everything that was seen to be imperial was condensed into Wembley's streets. Giant palaces and pavilions housed the treasures of the Dominions, India, the Crown Colonies, the Protectorates and the mandated territories.
