What is the extent, and reasons for, the Ancient fascination with Egypt? Since the time of Alexander the Great the ancient world has been fascinated by Egypt. The Greco-Roman Period stretches from the end of the fourth century B.C to the end of the fourth century A.D, encompassing the Greek takeover from the Persians in 332 BC to Roman Egypt, which officially began with the arrival of Octavian in 30 B.C., following his defeat of Mark Antony and Cleopatra in the battle at Actium. Egypt was a land of wealth for both the Greek Alexander and the self-proclaimed successor of the pharaohs, Octavian - later to become the emperor Augustus; it was a land which was flourishing economically and culturally.
