Since Gibbon's almost introductory research into the decline and fall of the Roman Empire there have been many historians intent on providing the answer to the collapse of one of the most powerful and influential Empires in history. Moses Finley gained the reputation as one of the most influential historians of this era with his research into manpower shortage in various aspects of the Empire, which eventually led to the fall of Rome. Finley carried out extensive research into theories put forward by other historians and used their ideas as support for his own. However, to what extent does Finley support the idea that this was the decisive factor? Within Finley's argument there are several strands, he conducted extensive research
