What do you understand by 'heroism' and how is it celebrated? The portrayal of heroism is, in today's society, normally achieved through influential mediums, particularly film and television, which convey essential heroic prerequisites such as honour, bravery and courage, men willing to sacrifice their own lives while protecting others. Indeed, movie superstars like Mel Gibson have cornered this profitable market niche, recycling familiar characters bound by loyalty and commitment. The predominant backdrop to these films is a war-zone, thus highlighting typical 'masculine' qualities, as witnessed in Braveheart, The Patriot and, perhaps most significantly, Gallipoli. It was the latter film that tapped into modern perceptions of heroism, emphasising that while notorious emperors and great leaders, such as William Wallace, are constantly revered figures of bravery, heroism is equally inherent within the so-called "cannon-fodder" (1), the thousands of rank-and-file soldiers, who, barr exceptions, are confined to anonymity within the realms...
