WHAT WAS THE WEMBLEY EMPIRE EXHIBITION OF 1924 MEANT TO ACHIEVE? The Wembley Empire exhibition was opened by the King on St Georges day, 23 April 1924. The exhibition made Wembley famous. Roads had been widened in the surrounding area in anticipation of the vast numbers that the exhibition hoped to attract. During its 150 days' opening, it was visited by 27 million people, more then half the population of Great Britain, and more then four times as many as went to the Great Exhibition of 1851. They came away with an impression of a thriving, forward-looking and diverse Empire. The main aim of the exhibition being to celebrate the achievements of the British Empire. The exhibition was given the maximum publicity throughout the Empire, the very first broadcast in Johannesburg was an organ recital to raise funds for the event.
