John Pearson states: 'the coliseum, more than any other building, symbolised the massiveness, the power and the sense of order of the new regime.'c12r1 The colossal size of the arena, alongside its oval design, allowed for a versatile performance area. This feature was as important in Imperial Rome just as it is today. While Wembley Stadium's oval arena can host athletics, dog racing, football and concerts because of its' adaptable performance area, the Coliseum could be used for gladiatorial combats, animal displays and executions, possibly even mock sea-battles.
