NEERAJ NARULA EARLY Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus was born in 12 AD in the town of Antium. He was raised in military camps with his dad. The soldiers at his father's camps gave him a nickname that stuck for life. He wore sandals called Caliga. This is the basis of the name Caligula, which in Latin means "Little Boots". ACCESSION Caligula was the youngest son in a family of nine children. He lived with his sisters at Capri, an island retreat, during the reign of Tiberius. In 37 AD, while Caligula was with him, Tiberius became ill and lapsed into a coma. Everyone thought Tiberius was dead and began to celebrate Caligula's accession, but then Tiberius woke. Caligula had enjoyed the attention so he simply had his biggest supporter and soon to be adviser, Macro, smother Tiberius with his own bed clothes. The will of Tiberius stated that Caligula would be joint heirs...
