Is "late antiquity" a more accurate phrase than "the Fall of Rome"? Why? The end of the Roman Empire is something many different historians have sought to explain, and to this day the discussion still continues. Unfortunately, our picture of Roman life is impaired, and the current picture we have of it is built up from evidence emanating from various disciplines. The traditional view of the end of the Roman Empire has been that of it being swept out of Europe by barbarian armies, culminating in the sacking of Rome. This is by no means a complete explanation, and there are many different arguments put forward which attribute the general decline after the first century to various different causes.
