Is Din Ilahi India's weapon against war? Akbar was a great Indian ruler, 1556 - 1605, and an extremely foresighted man similar to Ashoka, c200BC Indian Emperor. I do not agree that he was a "bad Muslim". His Islamic orthodox subjects may have perceived his foresightedness and desire to improve his empire as a dereliction from Islam but he remained faithful and "never for a moment forgot God" (Banerjee, 1974: 404). Akbar believed that the success of his empire depended on all of his subjects cooperating without prejudices. To determine if Akbar was a "bad Muslim", Islam requires definition. The central belief of Islam is "there is no God but Allah and Muhammed is his prophet" (Murphy, 2002a: topic 9). Even though Islam is a monolithic religion, it has diverse sects.
