Joanna Amato 2/20/03 Dr. Butler SCI 120 Hypatia of Alexandria Hypatia of Alexandria was the first woman, and among the first men, to make a substantial contribution to the development of mathematics and philosophy. Hypatia's life was enriched with a passion for knowledge and most historians now recognize Hypatia not only as a preeminent mathematician and scientist, but also as a principal philosopher. We do not know exactly where Hypatia was born or much about her mother. What we do know is she was born around 370 A.C.E to a man named Theon, who was considered one of the most educated men in Alexandria, Egypt. He was a well-known scholar and distinguished professor of mathematics at the University of Alexandria. Theon was also the last recorded director of the Museum at Alexandria.
