Ancient civilization of Egypt and Mesopotamia To compare and contrast the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms in Egyptian history, one must address the characteristics that define a civilization. The characteristics that will be used to describe the similarities and differences between the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms in Egyptian civilization will be the religious practices of the Ancient Egyptians, the contributions that they made, typical Egyptian life, and the ways that they related to others who were not Egyptian. The Old Kingdom ruled Egypt from approximately 4200-3100 B.C. This period is marked by the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt, under the rule of King Menez. At this time the capital of Egypt was Memphis, the area where the two areas joined. This is the period where pyramids first occurred.
