How does Frayn represent Mrs Haywards in the novel? Mrs Haywards is presented in many ways throughout the novel. Frayn presents Mrs Haywards to be luxurious and relaxed lady. Mrs Haywards speaks in a polite and questioning tone. "Would you two like a glass of milk?" Mrs Haywards does not demand the fact that she is going to give Stephen and Keith both a glass of milk however she asks politely, this shows that Mrs Haywards has been presented to be a polite woman. "She spoke softly and smilingly, with a kind of calm amusement". This proves that Mrs Haywards is a gentle and nice person. Stephen describes Mrs Haywards to be soft and calm which shows that Mrs Haywards is a fragile and delicate person.
